What is it?

A comprehensive rehabilitation technique to effectively treat chronic spinal, hip and knee pain.

What does it involve?

Physiotherapeutic treatment that consists of loosening tight musculature, manual therapy to straighten/align your pelvis, spine and lower limbs and exercises to lock everything in place. All in one session.

Does it work?

Many have found little help in the current medical system that provides mostly short-lived, symptomatic relief. This is a process providing restoration of POWER resulting in sustainable pain relief.

Is it a miracle cure?

No. Nothing is. But as a logical and effective mechanical treatment process, it will have you moving and feeling better within a few treatments. More importantly it provides a sound platform to build sustainable, pain-free movement.

Force Balance Technique’ is derived from years of research and clinical trial by physiotherapist, registered massage therapist and licensed acupuncture and IMS practitioner Dean Kotopski. He is the owner and clinical director of Performax Health Group in Burnaby, British Columbia.An industrial accident early in his career left him sidelined with lower back injury and frustrated with the inability to find sustainable pain relief from conventional therapy. That’s when he realized there was no consistent process to “fixing” a human mechanical problem other than the ‘try this therapy and if it doesn’t work maybe try that other kind’ approach.

Force Balance Technique’ utilizes many forms of therapy in a specific sequence to efficiently restore alignment, stability and mobility to the skeleton and soft tissues. Let’s look at low back pain as an example. 80-85% of us will develop debilitating low back pain (LBP) that will cause us to miss work, sporting functions or social events at least once in our lifetime. Many of you have felt the pain and frustration of your low back going “out”. These events usually last from 4-7 days and resolve nicely with rest, light stretching, manual therapy and anti-inflammatory meds. But what happens if your problem becomes chronic, meaning it’s lasted for several weeks or months and despite all the physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic or exercises you do, nothing is helping?

The current system of rehabilitative therapy bring offered to the public is not designed to deal well with complex mechanical problems. I am talking about the piece-meal way you are being offered treatment for your ongoing pain: try this and if that does’t work then do the other thing and if that doesn’t work…..you get the picture.

Let’s look at why. Generically speaking, massage loosens, joint manipulation re-aligns/mobilizes and therapeutic exercise tightens. Loosen-Mobilize/Align-Tighten. Isn’t that more or less the same way we fix things in the mechanical/industrial world? So maybe we should apply that same logic to humans as well. Loosen the tight muscle(s) – mobilize/align the joint – re-inigrate functional movement under load with exercise. In every treatment session you undergo. This point is a big deal. So much so that we as a clinic are constantly integrating better ways to help you undergo this type of process.

With specific respect to your chronic low back problem the issue is most likely not just your lumbar spine (low back), it’s your pelvis as well. The vast majority of chronic low-back pain clients we assess and fix that have no pre-existing history of arthritis have a mal-aligned pelvis as the main source of their problem. If the pelvis is mal-aligned, it is very unlikely you will resolve resultant low-back strain/sprain by treating the low back. It is actually completely illogical to expect a house or building to function properly on a twisted foundation so why would we expect your low back or any other region to be different.

Something else to consider. Capsular instability of the low-back facet joint(s) is extremely underrated as the reason for your chronic instability or your back going “out” meaning that the tissue(s) that hold your joints in place are potentially stretched and less effective for support. In my experience, manual therapy, IMS/acupuncture and core exercise are not enough to overcome this type of chronic instability.

We have been very aware of this point as clinicians and, when appropriate, have been using a process called PRP injection (Platelet Rich Plasma) to help add strength to these tissues. In fact, anywhere in the body where sprain has occurred there is potential for chronic instability of that joint. This is why I insist that my clinicians are acutely aware of this point as ignorance leads to excessive and ineffective (not to mention costly $$) treatment of our clientele.

Mechanically speaking, there are four tenets that create human power:

  • Skeletal Alignment
  • Joint Stability
  • Joint/Soft Tissue Mobility
  • Neuromuscular Recruitment

You almost always cannot successfully “train” someone strong who does not satisfy these first three conditions. Simply put, if you want durable strength outcomes make sure the frame is aligned, stable and mobile to the max before you start a strength and conditioning program. You cannot maximally strengthen a low back that is unstable, hyper/hypomobile or is sitting on a twisted pelvis. We refer to this as “strengthening the problem” rather than solving the problem and this approach inevitably leads to chronic suffering.
